What is this all about?God sent His Son to die in your place, He poured out His wrath on Jesus, who suffered for you. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 tells us that the gospel (the good news) is Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. Jesus was killed in your place and punished for your sins, He was buried for three days, and then He rose from the dead!
Most people agree concerning the historical fact that Jesus was crucified, buried, and rose again. The question is why? The Bible teaches us that Jesus committed no sin, yet He died as a criminal. There was more taking place on that cross than just the death of an innocent man. The Bible refers to Jesus in Isaiah 53:10, when it says “Thou shalt make His soul an offering for sin.” Just as a perfect Lamb in the Old Testament would be slaughtered for the sins of Israel, God slaughtered His own Son for our sins.
In the Gospel of John, John the Baptist actually introduces Jesus as “The Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world.” Again, we see in 2 Corinthians 5:21, “For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.” On the cross, Christ took your place and received your payment “wages” for sin.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” – Romans 6:23
Have you ever told a lie, stolen even one thing, or had a lustful thought? Of course, we all have. You have violated God’s perfect standard, and deserve His wrath, but through Christ you can escape the eternal flames of Hell.
What must you do?
Since we know that we are sinners who will be judged for our sin, and believe that Jesus died in our place to take the punishment for us, then what must we do to receive forgiveness? There is a story in the Bible where a man asks this same question to the Apostle Paul. His answer may surprise you.
”Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.” – Acts 16:30-31
The Bible is very clear concerning the fact that we cannot earn forgiveness but that it is a gift from God through the work that Jesus did for us on the cross.
“Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.” – Galatians 2:16
“Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:” – Romans 3:20-24
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” – Ephesians 2:8-9
Are you ready to be saved?
Salvation is not in a prayer, or a lifestyle, it is in a person (Jesus)! The Bible rebukes the idea that religious people can somehow become righteous through their prayers, gifts, or lifestyle.
“For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.” – Romans 10:3
The Bible makes it very clear that a person must trust Jesus alone to forgive them and that we cannot do anything to assist in this work. To assist Him is to deny His work and to attempt to save ourselves. This is an outright rejection of Jesus and his blood that He shed for us on the cross.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.” – Romans 10:9-11
Today you can be right with God and have the assurance of salvation by resting in the work that Jesus did for you on the cross. He died for your sins so that you could be righteous!
